Joe Samuel Starnes, known simply as Sam to friends and family, is a novelist and journalist living in Philadelphia where he is a Visiting Writer at Saint Joseph's University. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and The Philadelphia Inquirer, among other places. Essays have appeared in the Yalobusha Review and CrossRoads: A Southern Culture Annual; five biographic sketches appeared in the Literature edition of the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture. An earlier novel won an honorable mention in the 2002 Florida First Coast Writing Conference Novel Contest. He holds a journalism degree from the University of Georgia and an M.A. in English from Rutgers. He was awarded a fellowship to the 2006 Sewanee Writers' Conference.
